This is how I made a rolling lumber storage cart in an attempt to get organized. Every woodworker probably experiences this same phenomenon: I have one spot in the shop that became my scrapwood pile. At first it was neat, but it quickly became a haven of every strange offcut that my idiot brain thought someday may prove useful. Because of this insane hoarding, it grew to a sprawling mess that my teenage self would have looked upon with horror. This needed fixed. This cart was my solution.
The project was done in about an afternoon and used primarily scraps I had on hand. I had to buy a couple extra 2×4’s, but this entire thing is made of 2×4’s and leftover ½” OSB board. Other than that, it’s wood screws and then 6 caster wheels.
The cart is 6’ long and 3’ wide. The boards that stand straight up are 4’ tall (they overlap the base, but the caster wheels end up making it close to 4’ tall in the end). I used leftover scraps to cover the front, back, and sides. All of this can be seen in the video. If you want to make one of these, you don’t have to be exactly like this one. Just make one that makes sense for your space. I’m a father with two children, so I’m essentially too lazy to go out and measure the exact dimensions of the cart to document in this blog. And let’s be honest, it’s kind of amazing I’m taking the time to make a YouTube video and write a blog about an ugly, splinter-giving, shamble of a lumber cart.
In fact, if you’ve made it this far in the blog, you’ll realize I’m treating this as a test to see how many people reach out to tell me about the blog. Bless you if you’ve come this far. Find me on Instagram and twitter at @dad_crafted. In fact, the first person to reach out and let me know they got this far will get a special surprise from me in the mail.
Thanks for reading and watching!
Cheers!
